Army chow (and Navy, Air Force, etc.) has come a long way, but when troops are on the move the food can sometimes be sub par. When deployed or on maneuvers they might find themselves living off of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), a prepackaged meal designed to be edible (if not palatable) hot or cold. Many soldiers (and sailors, airmen, etc.) swear by Tabasco and other condiments as a means of making MREs a little more ready to eat.
