Ursula K. LeGuin's classic tetralogy of a young wizard's education, trials, and ultimate triumph is a piece of literary art as well as a great story, focusing as it does on the connection between language and magic. Far less lighthearted than the Harry Potter books, though there are many flashes of humor—teenagers and older readers will appreciate the sophisticated, occasionally grim tone of this series.
