Solid Wood Clock
What it is: A solid wood clock with mysteriously glowing numbers.
Why we love it: We admit that today's cool gift heralds no great leap forward in technology. Since it's mostly LEDs and wood, everything required to produce these clocks has been around for a while. Even if it's not totally ground-breaking, it is totally cool. Until you turn it on, the clock does its best imitation of something you might find lying around a wood shop, that is, a brick of carved wood. Once it's plugged in, the smooth front of the clock suddenly alights to display hidden numbers beneath the surface of what appears to be solid wood. How's that for sleek design? An extremely simple three-button design allows you to set the time and how it will display (You can make it constant, blinking, or lighting up once a minute), but aside from that it appears to be smooth, unblemished wood. It is, strangely enough, an equally cool gift for those who like gadgets, and those who like simple, natural things. That's not a recommendation we can give a gift often, but this little art-piece/gadget fits the bill.
Where to get it: From Think Geek for a gadgety-stylish $149.99
