What it is:
A swank, Italian designed knife block with a cool sense of style and a gory sense of humor.
Why we love it:
Ok, take a moment to think about the person who you're shopping for. Now, picture their knife block... Can't do it, can you? In fact, you probably couldn't tell for sure if they even had a knife block, or just have their knives all jumbled together in a drawer. There's just nothing interesting about a knife block. It's a block of wood, usually blonde, full of holes for various sized knives. If you want to get really fancy, it might have a magnetic strip to stick knives to, or hooks to hang them from. There's not much you can say about them. Like most pedestrian household objects, we found ourselves unsatisfied. Suppose, for whatever reason, we really wanted to get someone a knife block; must we suffer through a sea of generic options, finally settling on the least offensive of the bunch? If you've read this column before, I think you know the answer is a resounding "No!" An ordinary knife block simply will not do, and so we present you with a knife block that is positively extraordinary. The Voodoo knife block, created by Italian design guru Raffaele Iannello, is an exercise in form meeting function. The hapless fellow holds a set of 5 stainless steel knives, each one held firmly in its hole by small magnets. In use, it's very much like any other knife block, but in appearances, well, that's a knife block of a different color. With cool styling and a bright, bold color, the Voodoo block takes knife blocks out of the aesthetic gutter and lifts them up in front of the light. It's a unique and stylish conversation starter that will hold attention as well as it holds knives. You may never have thought a knife block would be a good gift, but it's time to change your mind.
