Undersea Encounter Aquarium
What it is: A unique aquarium equipped with a scope to view the little fishies in their natural habitat.
Why we love it: Since time immemorial, children have been begging, wheedling, pleading and pouting their way into pets. Since early cave-dwelling child first spied to adorably fuzzy baby wooly mammoth and created that infernal phrase, "aw, please can I keep him?" parents have found themselves with their back against the wall, forced to give in to pet related demands or suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous sulking. Of course, many parents don't want to be saddled with the irksome care of a puppy or kitten and no matter how much they insist that they will, they never take care of everything themselves. Fish are a good compromise, requiring fairly minimal care and absolutely guaranteed not to pee on the rug. The only trouble is, fish, not being fuzzy, fluffy or prone to playing with bits of string, require a little something extra to make them compelling. Fortunately, something extra is here. The Undersea Encounter Aquarium comes equipped with their very own viewing scope that allows them to see the inside of the tank from a fish eye view. A feeding pod hangs in front of the scope, allowing them to attract their fishy friends for a closer look. Suddenly a batch of ordinary guppies become an undersea adventure! Jules Verne would be proud. We can't guarantee that this will prevent them from begging for a puppy, but it ought to buy you a few months at least.
Who we'd give it to: Curious kids, science geeks, Pisces, Captain Nemo
Where to get it: From Hammacher Schlemmer for an exploratory $39.95
