Survival Kit-In-A-Can
What it is: A fully stocked survival kit in a package about the size of a sardine can.
Why we love it: If you're backpacking, chances are you've got your pack absolutely stuffed to the brim with every kind of supply you could possibly need. If you get lost, you'll have built yourself a little lean-to and cooked a five-course meal in nothing flat. Of course, not everyone can be as spectacularly prepared as you, and not everyone gets lost only when they're backpacking. For the lowly hiker, or the mere nature lover, it may be a good idea to have something on hand that addresses emergency needs, but doesn't require scaffolding to carry around. For the naturalist on the go, we love the survival kit-in-a-can, which, despite its diminutive size, comes complete with (deep breath); a compass, 2 fire starters, 9.8 ft of multi-use cord, 1 survival information booklet, 3ft of wire, 4 waterproof matches, 10ft fishing line, 1 bouillion soup packet, 1 tea bag, 1 sugar packet, 1 match book, 2 antiseptic swabs, 1 razor blade, 3 twist ties, 1 foot of duct tape, 1 signal mirror, 1 zip-lok bag, 2 adhesive bandages, 2 nails, 2 safety pins, 2 fish hooks, 1 signal whistle, 1 pc chewing gum, 1 sewing needle, 1 energy candy, 1 piece note paper, 1 pencil, and a partridge in a pear tree*. It's jam-packed with just about everything you could possibly need, which might make you feel a little silly for carrying around that 40 pound backpack.
*Just kidding about the partridge.
Where to get it: From Fred Flare for a completely prepared $12.95
