Pixel Blocks
What it is: A brightly colored set of building blocks with a distinctly digital look.
Why we love it: We like Legos, we do. We grew up on Legos; first the big ones, with the rounded corners, then the smaller and more complex ones, and finally the enormous sets with dozens of super specialized pieces that were more like a sculpture than a toy. It's because we love Legos that we fully understand the crushing blow that it is to realize you've misplaced one of those tiny, crucial pieces without which you can never finish; or the terrifying confusion of discovering you have extra parts. We also admit, we always felt a bit penned in by the instructions, which only ever wanted us to make the pirate ship, or construction site, or other single design that was originally intended. We always wanted a bit more flexibility than that, a bit more control over our design, and we suspect that most kids do, at least some of the time. Enter Pixel Blocks, the truly, endlessly customizable building blocks. Pixel blocks are tiny (3/8th of an inch, to be precise), clear building blocks that mimic the pixels on a computer screen. Just like the pixels on your computer, the design possibilities are endless. These little multi-colored blocks can be snapped together with infinite variation, and if you lose a piece, it's easily replaceable.
Who we'd give it to: Kids, geeks, engineers, 8-bit people.
Where to get it: From Ouray Toys for a digital $29.95
