Cool Gift of the Day

What it is:
A set of glowing, color-changing, silicone eggs that shed a unique light.
Why we love it:
We noticed the other day that we were creeping towards the end of 2005; we have to admit it took us a little by surprise to suddenly realize that shortly we'd be in the latter half of the new millennium's first decade. Our future has, overnight, become the present, at least, so our copy of Popular Science tells us. We passed through 1984 without descending into the dystopia of a brave new world, and 2001 came and went without any noticeable space odysseys. We have to admit, we're a little confused; if this is the future, where is our rocket car and our robot companion? Our present isn't nearly as futuristic as our past had led us to believe it would be, and while we're glad to have missed out on Orwell's vision of the future, we would like some more cool toys. The unfuturistic present isn't entirely without cool, sci-fi devices however, and for sheer useless, decorative cool we have to give Oggz the big thumbs up. Oggz are a revolution in lighting, no cords, no plugs, no bulbs, no need to even be stuck with a single color. These little silicone eggs charge on their base station and then emit a constant, shifting glow of colors (seven shades all together) for up to 5 hours. You can put them on your desk, use them to light a relaxing bath, even juggle them if you're so inclined. Each Ogg contains an impact resistant LED that will bring a vibrant wash of color to any space. They make a great cube toy, a fabulous night light or just a conversation piece to have around the house. The future may not be quite here yet, but hey, at least we can pretend.
Who we'd give it to:
Sci-Fi fans, geeks, kids who are afraid of the dark, evil alien overlords, robot companions.
