Dr. Seuss Goes To War
What it is: A collection of World War II cartoons drawn by Dr. Seuss before he was Dr. Seuss.
Why we love it: When you think of Dr. Seuss fans, your first image is probably a small child. Many of us grew up on Yertle the Turtle, The Lorax and other classics for Dr. Seuss, and many of us read them to our own children. As adults we probably have a deeper appreciation for some of the political commentary present in Dr. Seuss books, which tackled issues like nuclear proliferation, racism, pollution, and the dangers of turtle stacking. What you might not know about Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) is that before he started writing children's books, he made his living as a political cartoonist for the New York based PM Magazine. During WWII, Theodore Geisel drew a series of biting political cartoons that are now collected in a single volume, Dr. Seuss Goes to War. For the serious Dr. Seuss fan, or the politically active, this is a must have volume. The cartoons are every bit as brilliant as his work for children, and far more biting. It's a coffee table book that actually does invite people to thumb through it, and is sure to inspire laughter, conversation and more.
Who we'd give it to: Dr. Seuss completists, the politically active, WWII history buffs, turtles.
Where to get it: From Amazon.com for a satirical $12.21
