Art is a messy business. If you really want to let children go wild with their imaginations and their artistic skills, you’ll need to prep them first. Perhaps a dropcloth or newspapers to protect the floor, and a smock for the Artist. A smock that covers the child from neck to below waist level, with long sleeves and pockets in the front for stashing art materials, works best.
